Geologist to discuss recent Mauna Loa eruption

U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Frank Trusdell from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdayu recounts the 2022 Mauna Loa eruption — what was learned from it and how it can help island residents better prepare for the next eruption — in the Puʻuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park amphitheater in Honaunau.

The presentation is free and open to the public. No reservations required. This event is part of the Volcano Awareness Month series held each January.

AAUW-Kona announces scholarships

The American Association of University Women (AAUW-Kona) will award two $1,000 scholarships this spring to exceptional West Hawaii female high school seniors, home-schooled senior girls and women who may have been in the workplace, or women who are returning to school may apply. Financial need taken into consideration for all categories.

Criteria reviewed includes academic achievement, involvement in extra-curricular activities, community organizations, and/or employment experience, educational and career goals, and financial need. A written essay, resume and completed application are required with supporting documents.

Applications will be mailed to high school counselors, and Palamanui counselors, and will be posted on AAUW-Kona website, kona-hi.aauw.net by Feb. 1.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW-Kona) will also award three scholarships of $2,000 each this spring to exceptional female high school seniors with financial need in West Hawaii, who will be attending a two or four year college or university.

Criteria for choosing scholarship recipients are – academic achievement, involvement in extracurricular high school activities, community organization and/or employment experience, education and career goals, and financial need. A written essay, resume and completed application are required with supporting documents.

Applications will be mailed to high school counselors or available to download on AAUW-Kona website, kona-hi.aauw.net, by Feb. 1. Home-schooled seniors are welcome to apply.
